Root Canal Therapy

You may need a root canal if the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, trauma, or repeated dental procedures. Common symptoms include severe tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling, and tenderness in the gums.

Contrary to common belief, a root canal is not typically painful. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the treatment. Some discomfort or mild soreness may occur afterward, but it is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain medication.

Root canal therapy typically takes one to two appointments, depending on the complexity of the tooth and the infection. Each appointment usually lasts between 60 to 90 minutes. In some cases, a follow-up visit may be necessary to place a crown or filling after the root canal is completed.

After a root canal, you may experience some mild discomfort or swelling for a few days, especially if there was infection prior to the treatment. You can manage this with pain relievers, and any discomfort should subside as the area heals. Your dentist may recommend placing a crown on the treated tooth to restore its function and appearance.
